What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment in which needles are inserted into the body to assist in healing or relieve pain. In Alberta, acupuncture is delivered by a Western (Anatomical) Approach or Traditional Chinese Medicine Approach. 

In Western Acupuncture, needles are inserted into anatomical structure. Variations include electroacupuncture, IMS (intramuscular stimulation) and dry needling. Common providers of Western Acupuncture include:

  • Physiotherapists
  • Chiropractors
  • Physicians
  • Dentists
  • Acupuncturists

In Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture, needles are inserted into meridian points. The treatment approach looks at qi (flow of energy) and the technique is used to create balance. Common providers of Traditional Acupuncture include:

  • Acupuncturists
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners

1. How much does acupuncture treatment cost?

Acupuncture Fees vary depending on the service provided and the funding source fee guideline. On average, acupuncture fees by an Acupuncturist range from $70 to $130 per treatment. Physiotherapists doing acupuncture may add the service as part of a physiotherapy visit. Rates range from $70 to $100 per treatment.  

2. Should I do Western or Traditional Acupuncture?

If your injury is physical in nature, most patients will do best with a physiotherapist. If you injury is not physical in nature (i.e. Smoke cessation, Weight loss, etc), you should consult an acupuncturist or Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner.

3. How much does acupuncture therapy cost?

Acupuncture fees vary depending on the service provided. Typically, acupuncture fees vary depending on the condition and complexity. The typical visit range from $70 to $120. For Western Acupuncture, the fee is part of the professional fee. Some clinics may an additioanl "Tray Fee" for acupuncture.
