Sleep Medicine

What is Sleep Medicine?

Sleep Medicine is a medical specialty focused on sleep disorders and disturbances.

Sleep Medicine uses a systematic approach to assess and treat sleep disorders. If self-care and patient education is not effective, physicians may recommend non-prescription ‘natural’ products or prescribe oral medications. In resistant cases, a more comprehensive evaluation and team approach may be required. This includes:

  • Level 1 Sleep Tests
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Somnologist
  • Respirologist
  • Respiratory Therapist
  • Psychology
  • Pharmacist
  • Pain management
  • Naturopathic Medicine

Is Sleep Medicine for Me?

Sleep Medicine is for patients who have issues with sleep. Common conditions include:

  • Sleep apnea (snoring)
  • Insomnia
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness including narcolepsy
  • Shift work/jet lag/delayed sleep phase
  • Movement disorders such as restless legs syndrome
  • Parasomnias (e.g., sleep walking, night terrors and violent behavior in sleep)

Sleep Medicine – Pain Triage

Sleep Medicine wait time in Alberta can be lengthy. The Sleep Medicine Triage is for patients who have disturbed restorative sleep due to pain.

Program Cost

The patient cost is $200.

Process for Sleep Medicine - Pain Triage

1. You will need to email sleep@albertaPT.comto arrange an appointment.
2. At your appointment, you will be assessed by a physiotherapist and physician.
3. The physiotherapist will:
- Review your medical history
- Complete a Sleep Disorder Screen
- Complete a Pain Evaluation
4. The physician will:
- Review your medications
- Prescribe medications if needed

After Your Sleep Medicine – Pain Triage

At the conclusion of your evaluation, a report will be generated.  Within 5 business days, your report will be sent to the Sleep Medicine Physician and Family Physician.

From the Report Recommendations, you will receive an email from our Care Coordination eService. The eService will provide you with useful information and exercises. If you have questions about the material provided, you should print the material and discuss it with your Family Physician.

If the Sleep Medicine Physician believes you are an appropriate candidate for the service, you will be contacted by his office. If you do not hear anything from the Sleep Physician following the Triage, contact us at

1. How much does Sleep Medicine – Pain Triage evaluation cost?

The patient fee is $200.

2. How much does a Level 1 Sleep Study cost?

The patient fee is $1000 for base test, and $1200 for the extended test.

3. How much does a Level 3 Sleep Study cost?

If the Sleep Medicine – Pain Triage determines a Level 3 Sleep Study Test is required, the patient fee for this test is waived.

4. Do I get a refund if I am not a candidate for Sleep Medicine?
